دعا عدد من أعضاء مجلس الشيوخ الأمريكي من الحزبين الجمهوري والديمقراطي، إلى إجراء انتخابات في فنزويلا، بعد سبعة أشهر من إقدام إدارة الرئيس دونالد ترمب على إزاحة الرئيس آنذاك نيكولاس مادورو وتنصيب نائبته رئيسة مؤقتة للبلاد.

وقدم السيناتور الجمهوري تيد كروز، عن ولاية تكساس، والسيناتورة الديمقراطية جين شاهين، عن ولاية نيوهامبشير، مشروع قرار يؤكد دعم الولايات المتحدة لإجراء انتخابات في فنزويلا، ويدعو إلى الإفراج عن جميع السجناء السياسيين، ومحاسبة أي شخص، بمن فيهم كبار المسؤولين الحكوميين، إذا ثبتت مسؤوليته عن إيذاء أي شخص يسعى لتولي منصب عام.

ويأتي مشروع القرار، الذي يحظى بدعم الحزبين، في ظل تزايد الانتقادات لما يعتبره منتقدون إخفاقًا من إدارة ترمب في إحداث تغيير حقيقي في فنزويلا عبر دفع الحكومة، التي تقودها حاليًا الرئيسة المؤقتة ديلسي رودريغيز، نحو تنظيم انتخابات حرة ونزيهة.

ومن المقرر أن تبدأ خلال الأيام القادمة محادثات بين الحكومة الفنزويلية المؤقتة وأحد فصائل المعارضة، لكنها ستجري من دون مشاركة ماريا كورينا ماتشادو، أبرز زعيمة للمعارضة في البلاد.

وقال كروز، وهو عضو بارز في لجنة العلاقات الخارجية بمجلس الشيوخ: إن «الشعب الفنزويلي يستحق انتخابات حرة ونزيهة وشفافة، ومن الضروري للمصالح الأمنية القومية للولايات المتحدة أن تُجرى هذه الانتخابات في أسرع وقت ممكن».

من جانبها، قالت شاهين إن السلطات في كاراكاس يجب أن تفرج عن جميع السجناء السياسيين، وأن تسمح لجميع الأطراف السياسية، بما في ذلك ماريا كورينا ماتشادو، بالعودة إلى البلاد بأمان والمشاركة في النشاط السياسي.

ويحظى مشروع القرار أيضًا بدعم خمسة أعضاء آخرين في مجلس الشيوخ، بينهم أربعة ديمقراطيين وجمهوري واحد.

وكانت ماتشادو، الحائزة على جائزة نوبل للسلام، قد غادرت فنزويلا أواخر العام الماضي لتسلم الجائزة، بعد أن عاشت معظم الوقت متوارية عن الأنظار منذ الانتخابات الرئاسية المتنازع على نتائجها في عام 2024، وتعهدت بالعودة للمساعدة في مواجهة آثار الزلزالين المدمرين اللذين ضربا البلاد في يونيو، وهو ما أثار تحفظ مسؤولين أمريكيين يرون أن التوقيت غير مناسب.

ونفى الرئيس ترمب تقارير إعلامية تحدثت عن أن إدارته طلبت من ماتشادو عدم العودة، فيما استمرت واشنطن، منذ إزاحة مادورو، في تهميش دورها سياسيًا، بدعوى أنها لا تحظى بالدعم الكافي لقيادة البلاد.

A number of U.S. senators from both the Republican and Democratic parties have called for elections in Venezuela, seven months after President Donald Trump's administration removed then-President Nicolás Maduro and installed his vice president as the interim president of the country.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas and Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire introduced a resolution affirming U.S. support for holding elections in Venezuela, calling for the release of all political prisoners and accountability for anyone, including senior government officials, if found responsible for harming anyone seeking to hold public office.

The resolution, which has bipartisan support, comes amid growing criticism of what critics see as the Trump administration's failure to bring about real change in Venezuela by pushing the government, currently led by interim President Delcy Rodríguez, towards organizing free and fair elections.

Talks are set to begin in the coming days between the interim Venezuelan government and one faction of the opposition, but they will take place without the participation of María Corina Machado, the country's leading opposition figure.

Cruz, a prominent member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stated, "The Venezuelan people deserve free, fair, and transparent elections, and it is essential for U.S. national security interests that these elections be held as soon as possible."

For her part, Shaheen said that the authorities in Caracas must release all political prisoners and allow all political parties, including María Corina Machado, to return to the country safely and participate in political activities.

The resolution also has the support of five other senators, including four Democrats and one Republican.

Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, left Venezuela late last year to receive the award, after having lived most of the time in hiding since the disputed presidential elections in 2024. She pledged to return to help address the impacts of the two devastating earthquakes that struck the country in June, which raised concerns among U.S. officials who believe the timing is inappropriate.

President Trump denied media reports that his administration asked Machado not to return, while Washington has continued to marginalize its political role since Maduro's ousting, claiming it lacks sufficient support to lead the country.
