ردود الفعل لم تتأخر، حيث عبر الملياردير الأمريكي إيلون ماسك عن عدم ثقته بواتساب ودعا مستخدميه إلى اللجوء إلى تطبيق «تليغرام» لتبادل الرسائل والمكالمات الصوتية والفيديو، مؤكداً أن هذا التطبيق آمن ويصون خصوصية المستخدمين. وفي خطوة مشابهة، وصف مؤسس «تليغرام» بافيل دوروف تشفير «واتساب» بأنه «قد يكون أكبر عملية خداع للمستهلكين في التاريخ»، مشيراً إلى أن «واتساب» يقرأ الرسائل ويشاركها مع أطراف ثالثة، على عكس «تليغرام» الذي لم ولن يقوم بذلك.

من جهتها، نفت شركة «ميتا» هذه الادعاءات بشدة، مؤكدة أن جميع الرسائل محمية بتقنية التشفير من طرف إلى طرف، وأن خصوصية المستخدمين تعد أولوية قصوى بالنسبة لها.

Amid a wave of legal criticism, WhatsApp has become the center of a wide controversy following a class-action lawsuit filed against it in a U.S. federal court in California. The lawsuit accuses the company "Meta," which owns the app, of allowing third-party app developers and analytics companies to access the private message content of millions of users without their knowledge or consent, including major companies like Amazon and Google. Reactions were swift, with American billionaire Elon Musk expressing his distrust of WhatsApp and urging its users to turn to the "Telegram" app for messaging and voice and video calls, asserting that this app is secure and protects user privacy. In a similar move, Telegram founder Pavel Durov described WhatsApp's encryption as "possibly the biggest consumer deception in history," pointing out that "WhatsApp" reads messages and shares them with third parties, unlike "Telegram," which does not and will not do so.

For its part, Meta strongly denied these allegations, asserting that all messages are protected by end-to-end encryption and that user privacy is a top priority for the company.
